What The Fast Track Management Apprenticeship Means to Megan

Embarking on a journey of professional growth and skill development, Megan shares her reflections on what the Fast Track Management Apprenticeship means to her.

As a participant in this transformative program, Megan delves into the unique experiences, challenges, and opportunities that have shaped her career path.

Find out more about how BSS has supported her personal development, and why joining was a great career move for her and how it can be for you too.

“The interview process was great”

h2>“The interview process was great”

Megan previously had retail experience, but like many of our employees, joined us from another industry

For her, BSS is a new experience and the potential for career development really drew her to apply for the role.

Megan says she felt guided, supported and able to learn on the job as part of her Apprenticeship.

She said it became clear during the interview stage that BSS is heavily invested in the programme.

During the second stage interviews, the leadership team gave a presentation and she met the directors, who were down-to-earth and reassuring. It was such a positive experience, and it sold the Apprenticeship scheme well, Megan explains.

“No two days are the same”

Megan enjoyed the varying nature of the Fast-Track Management Apprenticeship, and that the role is different from one day to the next. She says that you do need a lot of self-drive and determination, but there is guidance from your manager.

As part of the Apprenticeship, there are modules on the system which help you to keep track of what tasks you need to complete and this is alongside your job role which could include assisting the drivers with deliveries, spending time in other branches and visiting the support functions at head office, explains Megan.

She gained experience working in an administrative-based role and another in the warehouse, where she enjoyed seeing the products, helping out with telephone sales and working on the trade counter. It was a completely new environment for her, and it gave her exposure to our customers and our product ranges.

“I’ve developed new skills”

Megan tells us that she has learned lots of new skills, from developing product knowledge to delivering customer service and liaising with her colleagues.

She enjoys the environment in the branch because the customers and staff create a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere where you feel included, and the Travis Perkins Group enable a culture where you can be yourself

Megan says that it was refreshing joining the Fast-Track scheme, as you don’t need to have a degree and there is so much progression, support and growth at BSS.

“I have built up a network”

As an Apprentice, Megan highlights the importance of fostering connections within the program.

She emphasises the value of regular catch-ups and conversations with fellow apprentices, facilitating the development of strong rapport and meaningful friendships.

Megan finds the ability to swap notes and embark on this journey together particularly beneficial, creating a reassuring support system that enhances the overall Apprenticeship experience.

“The opportunities are endless”

Once Megan completes her Apprenticeship, she's eligible to start the Business Management programme.

Having worked closely with her Regional Director (RD) on some exciting projects, she is looking forward to spending some time immersing herself in different departments as she continues on her career journey.

Megan tells us that once she completes the programme, she is excited by the number of opportunities available not just at BSS, but also within the wider Travis Perkins group.

“There is plenty of support”

If you’re thinking about applying for one of our apprenticeships at BSS, Megan’s advice would be to not be put off by a lack of experience or knowledge in the industry.

Megan says it didn’t stop or hinder her as there are plenty of people to help.

There is a real family feel within the Travis Perkins Group and the long average length of service means that there is plenty of experience to learn from.

Megan explains that she has never felt like she’s had to sink or swim because everyone at BSS is so friendly, and they have the time to support whatever level you are.
